New Lead Paint Regulations

February 26, 2010

To all remodeling contractors, repair companies and painting firms in Kansas

RE: New lead-based paint regulations.

Dear Kansas Business Owners and Operators,

Recently much attention has been focused on the new rules that must be followed by companies or individuals whose work disturbs paint on houses built prior to 1978. In March 2008 the EPA published the Repair, Renovation and Painting rule (RRP) to complement and enhance the existing Pre-Renovation Education rule, (PRE) which has been in effect since 2001. Both rules deal directly with what you must do prior to, during and after work is performed on homes in Kansas. Both rules are designed to protect you and the families you work for from lead poisoning.

The implementation of RRP in Kansas has a direct effect on you and the families in Kansas that you work for. KDHE is acting quickly to implement RRP and will enforce the rule in Kansas. KDHE will work with you to make certain that you all understand what the rules are, how they impact you and how you will be required to comply. There are very specific training, work practice and record keeping requirements associated with this rule. You are urged to read the information concerning these new requirements and contact us for more information.

The cost of complying with this rule will be lower through KDHE than EPA. Please read the associated guides and pamphlets and be ready to begin compliance soon.

We look forward to helping you through the implementation of the new regulations and pledge our support to assist you in the process. For more information visit www.kshealthyhomes.org or call the Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Prevention Program at 1-866-865-3233.

Sincerely

Tom Langer Signature
